You can add things like linseed, pumpkin and melon seeds to this recipe to give some extra crunchiness. If you add extra ingredients, take off an equal weight of oats so that the recipe works.

Makes 9 squares

Cooking time 20-25 minutes


100 g butter or margarine

50 g granulated sugar

2 tbs golden syrup

200 g rolled oats

½ tsp ground ginger


Preheat the oven to 180ºC/ Gas 4 and line a 18cm square baking tray with greased baking paper or baking parchment.

Melt the butter or margarine, sugar and syrup in a pan and then stir in all the dry ingredients and mix well.

Pack the mixture into the baking tray and press well down and into the corners.

Bake for 20-25 minutes until golden.

Mark into squares. Leave to cool in the tin and then break into squares along the marked lines
